This section is to help you know what kinds of ideas to pitch and how to pitch them. We accept pitches from storytellers across many mediums: journalists, experts, creative writers, poets, artists, photographers, and filmmakers.
Please reach out to [email protected] with climate and science pitches and [email protected] with culture and creative pitches following the Pitching Format outlined below.
If your story idea seems like a fit for Atmos, an editor will respond to learn more or begin commissioning the story. Once the word count, rate, and deadlines are decided upon, an agreement will be sent for you to sign.
While the story is reported and written, we’d expect an outline if it’s our first time working together. A first draft is submitted via Google Docs by the agreed upon deadline. We have a firm seven-day policy between when a first draft is submitted and when the story is published, so know that any lateness here will impact the publishing date.
From there, your story moves into editing. If it needs significant structural changes, your editor may ask you for a second draft. If not, revisions will be made in Google Docs where you will be expected to review and respond in a timely manner.
Once the story is signed off on by both the writer and editor, it will be published in accordance with its designated publishing date based on the Atmos editorial calendar.
After the story is published, please follow the steps in the Invoicing Guidelines section to initiate the payment process.
When pitching a story for Atmos, please use the following email format.
This should say “Pitch:” followed by a proposed headline for your story. The headline should be captivating and concise (under 10 words), and provide a clear idea of what the story is about. Example: “Pitch: Meet the Artist Behind the World’s First Underwater Sculpture Garden”
