Atmos has editors working from different time zones. To respect people's varied work hours, we ask that all non-emergency, work-related communication occur via email where possible. While we understand that communication can happen across a variety of platforms, please be mindful of each editor's preferred contact method and respect it. If an editor has asked not to be contacted via personal phone or text, please honor that request.
If you contact Atmos staff on weekends, please expect to hear back on the next business day.
If you will be traveling on assignment or working on an assignment over the weekend and there is a potential need to reach your editor immediately, establish lines of communication before you leave so your editor can anticipate alternative modes of communication.
Atmos staff and freelancers gain access to sources and information by being honest about our identities and intentions. We don’t make promises to sources about story angles or approach—but it is fine to discuss in general terms the story we’re considering or our general line of reporting. With an editor’s approval, it is acceptable when necessary to agree to protect a source’s identity or to a temporary embargo.
Atmos writers take responsibility for their work. We cite our sources (whether other media, individuals, or otherwise) with hyperlinks and/or attribution. We endeavor to report every story in a way that goes beyond what has already been covered. Writers attest to the originality of their writing (not copied from news releases nor from AI assistance). We confirm information before reporting it, and never knowingly report false information. Writers must immediately report errors or correction requests to their editor via email, who will quickly issue a review and/or correction.
Our editorial allegiance is to our readers, not foundations, sponsors, partners, or the Atmos board. We risk compromising our credibility if personal or professional interests conflict with that allegiance. Such conflicts could take many forms, via personal or familial relationships, business interests, or other ways. As professional journalists, we strive to be alert to any factor that may keep us from thinking independently and exercising our best professional judgment.
Freelancers are expected to execute their journalism without conflicts and must follow Atmos’ standards of professionalism. It is the responsibility of editors and producers to ask about a freelancer’s potential conflicts of interest before making an assignment.
Journalists must not engage in intimidation, harassment, or persistent pursuit. This extends to exchanges with editors.
